I was looking for a way to cut down on the electric bill that is environment friendly. Looking on the internet, I seen solar and water power. I was wondering if it is possible to create a hydro powered generator for people who do not live near running water.

In a word, maybe.

In order to have a successful micro hydro installation you need several things.

Elevation change (water must be above your location) Consistent water flow (at least part of the year) Right to use the water (water license) Right to retain the water if you are going to make a dam (water license) Place to dispose of the water after use (check local regulations or use for irrigation/ponds/livestock etc.)

So... if you can provide those things on your land or legally from off your property you can generate with water.

If you have a significant amount of rainfall and can catch it then you may be able to have some micro hydro potential without access to a stream, pond or other body of water by storing rainwater in a pond above your house then using the stored water to generate power.

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Micro_hydro for more information.

Good luck!
