Are there any dishwashers that are greener and use less water/energy than washing by hand?

It's best to wash dishes by hand. The key is that you don't keep the water running the whole time. Instead, use put a small amount of dish soap in a large mixing bowl and run the water into it to make suds. Fill up the bowl and turn off the water, and use the soapy water to wash the dishes. Then simply rinse the dishes when you're finished. That will use less soap, less electricity, and less water than any dishwasher possibly could.

If you do your dishes properly by hand you would use about the same amount of water as doing them in a dishwasher. The energy you could conserve quite a bit by doing them by hand rather than using an electronic device to wash them. All in all I think the best way to go is by using a dishwasher just for the reason that they do have energy efficient dishwashers but they can be costly.
