Green Public Procurement is the approach of the public authorities in the European Union to reduce the damage to environment the goods and services that they purchase cause. As people buy and use stuff that impact environment adversely decreasing the natural resources at a rate that cannot be sustained, the need was felt by the powers that be to intervene and regulate the buying pattern and volume of the buying they make. As major purchasers, public authorities have enormous scope to influence suppliers to innovate and produce more environmentally friendly goods and services. They are also empowered to persuade private sector companies and the general public to see that their purchases do not affect the environment. |
